How to file a mechanics lien in Louisiana
Unpaid for work or materials on a Louisiana construction project? Recorded contract and termination notices control the applicable period. Use this guide to organize the filing questions, then check the cited law against your role and project.
LA · PRIVATE CONSTRUCTION CLAIMS
Recorded contract and termination notices control the applicable period.
Section 9:4822 has several periods. Its default 60-day framework is subject to exceptions: a properly filed notice of contract changes the rules for certain claimants and general contractors.
Notices to check before filing
For some §9:4802 claims with a notice of contract, a termination notice triggers 30 days; without one, the provision uses six months after substantial completion or abandonment. Preserved general-contractor privileges follow a different rule.

A filing mistake to avoid
Using “60 days for everyone” can miss the effect of the recorded project notices.
Prepare your project records
Obtain the notice of contract, notice of termination if any, completion evidence, your contract tier, and all payment records.
- Identify who hired you and whether the property is privately owned.
- Confirm your notice obligations and the event that starts each time limit.
- Verify the owner and property description using appropriate records.
- Reconcile invoices, payments, credits, and disputed amounts.
- Keep filing and service receipts, and calendar any enforcement deadline.
After the claim is filed
Filing does not guarantee payment or establish that a disputed claim is valid. Preserve the filed document and delivery evidence. If payment arrives, arrange the required release or satisfaction. If the balance remains unpaid, seek advice about enforcement before its separate deadline expires.
